30th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week celebrations led by College of PT

Last July 14 – 18, 2008 was a weekful of activities for the University as the College of Physical Therapy together with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine – College of Medicine spearheaded the annual celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

The week was opened on Monday, July 14, 2008 with two inspirational guests, Ret. Col. Augusto Flores and Ms. Adeline Dumapong, both of Akapinoy. Ms. Dumapong, it should be noted, is a noted power lifter, a prodigy in athletics, who netted many national and international championships including a bronze medal in the last Paralympics. She will be representing the country in this year’s Paralympics in September 2008.

This year the theme, “Kapag May Access, May Success” is a reminder of the continuing need for the people to be aware of the importance of opportunities and what they mean especially for people with disabilities (PWDs).

Led by the drive of former College Secretary Dr. Josephine R. Bundoc, the activities of the week included lay forums, free medical services, Hataw Exercises and a symposium featuring foreign speakers.

Lay forums focused on two conditions that are frequently confused together. Dr. Geoffrey Battad of the UERM Department of Rehabilitation Medicine talked about osteoarthritis and its treatment. Dr. Laura Yumul of Villamor Air Base educated the people about the myths and facts of osteoporosis. She especially touched on its significance to postmenopausal women.

Together with various pharmaceutical companies, the College sponsored various free medical services, like Free ECG, FBS Screening, and in line with the Osteoporosis talk, an Osteoporosis Bone Screening.

Together with the correspondence of Ms. Roma Concepcion Verano (PT’02), Fitness First Fairview led two days of promoting a healthy lifestyle through exercise. GX Team Elite guided young beautiful people through rigorous routines of body jam, aero groove and aero combat, as done in Fitness First.

As a highlight of the week, two speakers from abroad were featured. Dr. Thomas Alexander Hale, Rehab Physician from Royal Melbourne Hospital talked about Diabetic Foot Management. He discussed new techniques, protocol and basic principles in treating this condition as performed in their unit in Melbourne. Dr. Gail Grisetti talked about Physical Changes in Adult Filipinos and the Role of the Physical Therapist. The symposium was held at the New College of Nursing Amphitheater.

Project: Green Building

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

Greetings from alumni and Friends of UERMMMC Foundation, Inc.

Many years ago, the Alumni and Friends obtained a one (1) hectare property in Antipolo which we envisioned to be the site of the Community Based Health Program (CBHP) of the UERM Medical Center. We envisioned that it will benefit the students and faculty of all the Colleges. We envisioned further that it will be the training site for CBHP in the country.

At last we have come to a crucial point in our project for which we seek your commitment. After all, the project is truly for UERM. We present to you for your consideeration, a project of a Green Building that will house the activities of the CBHP.

For a contribution of a minimum of PhP 5,000.00 or equivalent in dollars, you will have helped realize our collective dream to make UERM a model for this kind of health delivery, the primary health care which our country badly needs.

Be a part of this dream, let us help build this building.

Thank you very much.

Truly yours,

UERMMMC College of Physical Therapy Hymn

Oh hear our voice
That sings with utmost pride
With all our joys and tears
Your presence is our guide
We will rejoice
And run the race of giving care to all
We sing to you as we reach out
To serve is our reward

Your vision is to be known internationally
And as we scatter, we’ll proclaim it globally
Our mission is to be the best we can be
For our knowledge came from thee

Oh UERMMMC
College of Physical Therapy
We will hail your name with dignity
‘Cause of who we are we owe to God and thee

Oh UERMMMC
College of Physical Therapy
With honor and help from God and thee
We will waive our banners so high for thee

(Words and music by Adelaido P. Ubalde Jr. and Jack Daniel Calinawan, PT2004)

Now, We are 20!

Last June 20, 2008, the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center celebrated its 20th Anniversary Gala Night at the Tejeros Hall of Camp Aguinaldo. It was the culminating activity of a yearlong celebration by the College of Physical Therapy.

The program, which started at 6 pm, opened with an invocation by Suzanne Kristine Baysa and the Philippine National Anthem by Archelle Jane C. Callejo. A video was presented on the history of the College that let the audience feel the trip through 20 years of achievements, adventures and accolades.

The Dean, Dr. Arnel V. Malaya welcomed the guests as he acknowledged their presence. The President, Dr. Romeo A. Divinagracia; the College of Nursing Dean, Dr. Carmelita Divinagracia; the Dean of the Graduate School, Dean Teresa L. Yap; the SVP, Ms. Violetta Suquila; the Comptroller, Ms. Iris Militar; and the Registrar, Ms. Imelda Delos Reyes were also present to share in the celebrations. The UERM community, since it commemorated its 50th anniversary, was in a festive mood and a fitting way to cap the moments was the celebration of its youngest college.

A tribute to the Architects of the College was presented, amid long memories and glistening eyes. Former UE President Isidro D. Cariño was honored for his role in providing the drive and thrust the College needed through its inception. Dr. Juan A. Alcazaren Jr. was the first OIC of the College of PT from 1988 to 1989, and a mentor to Dr. Malaya, the present dean. Mrs. Serafina P. Maxino, was recognized for her role in the struggling years of the College both as one of the people in charge of the selection process of the first students of the school and one of the first instructors.

As part of the festivities, the PT Community recognized another recent feat of its graduates as they awarded two alumni for garnering top places in the February 2008 National Board Examinations for Physical Therapists. Shiela Marie L. Laurido (PT2001) ranked 4th with an average of 82.55% and Gregorio Tercero S. Dorado (PT2003) ranked 9th place with an average of 81.75%. They exemplify the continuing UERM spirit of competitiveness and excellence.

They were not the only alumni honored, however. Four alumni were also recognized for their service to the field of Physical Therapy and beyond, thus bringing honor to the school where they came from. The awardees are:
Gerard Martin, RPT, PTRP
Joven S. M. Tan, RPT, PTRP
Martin Aguda, PTRP
Rajawen C. Africa, PTRP
To make sure the awards didn’t stop there, the College of Physical Therapy Outstanding Alumni Awards were launched by Dr. Josephine R. Bundoc, former College Secretary. There were different categories that were presented in which alumni achievers can aspire to, but in the end, there can only be One who will be recognized with Da Juan Award: for the Best among the Best in all categories. The awards will be presented on the 25th anniversary of the College on 2013.

With a rising collective pride in the spirit of the College, the Hymns and Symphony, College of PT Chorale presented the first public performance of the UERM – CPT Hymn. Alumni Adelaido P. Ubalde Jr. (PT2004) and Jack Daniel L. Calinawan (PT2004) composed the sonorous tune, its lyrics echoing the goals of the College as fulfilled in every UERM PT Graduate. The night ended after dancing and partying with music provided by the Wodo tribe band.

Members of organizing committee were composed of College of PT faculty namely: Dr. Racquel S. Cabazor, Archelle Jane C. Callejo, John Christopher D. De Luna, Josephine R. Mata, Esther Melody R. Nicolas, Grace V. Ramos, Michael V. Resuello, and Fria Rose Santos headed by Rongie Bren S. Magdangal. (pics to follow. :) )

On December 16, 2007, Nature got a big helping hand from the UERM Community by the College's project: Tree for 20. The College invited students, alumni, and friends to contribute their resources for "kamuning" trees in the Quezon Memorial Circle. Donors were given the privilege of giving names to the trees they helped to take root on Quezon City soil, some liked to give tribute to family members, some gave creative names, and some chose to remain anonymous.
